Fall Maintenance Schedule

Impact: Users will see intermittent downtime on these hosts and related services throughout the day.

Explanation

• All ICS Linux hosts will receive the latest release kernel and security updates between 12/18-12/20.
• Most hosts will receive the latest OS packages between 12/18-12/20.
• Hosts with an uptime of close to 180 days will be rebooted in order to install the latest kernel.

The following hosts will be rebooted on 12/20 beginning on 0800:

SYSTEM: Cybertron and Unicron Network Appliance Filers

DATE: Wednesday, December 20th, 2017

START TIME: TBD

DURATION: 2 hour

Reason: Firmware upgrade. Upgrading OnTAP8 to the latest versoin.

Affects: There is no downtime associated with this work, however a small number of users may experience degraded performance on home or extra directories.

SYSTEM: Cisco Nexus Switches

DATE: Wednesday, December 20th, 2017

START TIME: TBD

DURATION: 2 hour

Reason: Firmware upgrade.

Affects: These swtiches route all traffic in the ICS data center and connect the ICS data center to the campus backbone. The switches are configured to provide redundancy to within the ICS data center as well as with the campus backbone. Service interuptions should be brief episodes of up to a minute. There may be several such interuptions.

SYSTEM: Lakeshore and HAL 9000

DATE: Wednesday, December 20th, 2017

START TIME: 0900

DURATION: 8 hour

Reason: Retiring round hole rack in favor of new square holed rack.

Affects: Tape backups and restores will be unavailable during the downtime.

Grid Engine 8.1.9 has been installed at ICS and is avaialble for immediate use.

The following queues are already avaialble on Grid Engine 8.1.9:

Beginning on December 18th, the rest of our Grid Engine queus will be migrated to version 8.1.9.

How does this affect you:

Users must ensure that all scheduled jobs have finshed before the move on 12/18/2017 at 0800. If the jobs have not completed, then users will need to resubmit their jobs to the new queue.

• Current SGE configurations has been copied direction to the new servers.
• Additional changes to the current SGE configuration will not be automatically available.
• Submit and Administrative hosts will remain the same.
• Jobs must complete before migration date at 0800.
• Jobs running before migration will not longer be visible after the transition, although some may complete.

Test out the new service: Login to andromeda-1 and submit jobs to the openlab.q. Notify helpdesk@ics.uci.edu if you encounter any problems.

Schedule: The table below lists the scheduled dates for individual queue migration. All migrations will take place on 12/18 unless otherwise noted.

• SYSTEM: Campus Network
• DATE: 12/5
• START TIME: 0200
• DURATION: 3 hours

Affects

OIT Network and Security Engineers will be enhancing the campus Border Router and Border Firewall bandwidth on Dec 5th between 2AM - 5AM.

Wired and wireless Internet services for all campus and residential housing, including the UCI Medical Center, will be intermittently unavailable during this upgrade window.

Communications between our Campus and Medical Center will not be affected during this upgrade window.

• SYSTEM: Computer Science Building 302 Network Routers
• DATE: 11/4
• START TIME: 0600
• DURATION: 2 hours

(Please note this is an estimate; systems may be up sooner or later than expected, due to unforeseeable circumstances.)

AFFECTS:

The Computer Science Building 302 and Information Computer Science 2 Building 304 will lose connectivity to campus during this period.

The ICS data center has a redundant 10Gb/s links to the campus backbone and should experience only a brief outage, if any, while spanning tree re-establishes. However, this is the first production test of fail over and care should be taken if you are conducting important research into or out of the ICS Data Center during this period.

REASON:

Campus network engineers from OIT will be swapping components that are due to be EOL'd this coming January out of the Cisco router on the first floor of the building.

Note From OIT

OIT's network engineers will be upgrading the building router at ICS (302) on Saturday, November 4 at 6 AM. ICS2 (304) is also connected to this building router, so this building will also be affected. Any UCI-Lightpath connections will not be affected.

SCOPE: Replacing unsupported network modules inside the building router's chassis.

COMMENTS:
All network connectivity to and from the building router will not be available during the outage. The upgrade should take approximately 30 minutes, but we set aside 2 hours to troubleshoot any unforeseen issues.

• SYSTEM: Information and Computer Science 2 Building 304 Router
• DATE: 11/18
• START TIME: 0600
• DURATION: 2 hours

AFFECTS:

The Bren Hall (building 314) router will be taken down during this period and the building will be disconnected from the campus network and the internet.

REASON:

Campus network engineers from OIT will be swapping components that are due to be EOL'd this coming January out of the Cisco router in this building.

• SYSTEM: andromda-[11-15,41-75]
• START DATE: 9/28
• End DATE: 10/13

AFFECTS:

The listed andromeda hosts will be offline.

REASON:

In order for vagrant to execute properly, a setting needs to be updated in BIOS. Due to time constraint we are unable to get to them at this time. In order to not cause confusion to students in the course, we'll be shutting off hosts where vagrant cannot be run until the problem can be remedied.

Impact: Occasional service outages

All ICS supported Linux computing that has been running for longer than 180 days will be updated and rebooted.
